In the moments as it becomes clear that there is no imminent gnoll charge, Tanner tells the others what he heard the gnolls say. "It wasn't clear, but my guess is the bulk of the gnolls are falling back to the caves while an advance party is out looking for us to find out our strength and location. As for the ogre, I have no idea where it is, but I know I'd hate to run into it in the dark."

"I say we keep our eyes out for the gnoll advance party, deal with them and then try to find their cave."

Tanner will also take this opportunity to take the gnoll horn over to the latern and try to read the runes that are inscribed on it (Decipher Script +9). If there was some way to figure out what the different horn blasts meant, Tanner hopes he might be able to confuse and misdirect the gnolls with it.
