Checking in you find you've been assigned to Third Battalion, Bravo Company, First Platoon...just now beginning to form up....rendered in short form as "B-1/3 of the 31st." This platoon is to serve as the core cadre for fleshing out the rest of the battalion. Those who distinguish themselves in Third Battalion's First Training will be moving on to fill some of the junior officer, warrant officer and nco slots for Third Battalion as it begins to flesh out to full strength.
There are a number of lads here, but surpringly, you find that you don't recognize anyone else from your home unit...though they may be in the other battalions, or companies, but you find interaction with other companies and battalions very limited, and will for the duration of your training. Those assembling in B-1/3 seem to come from all over the Flanaess...Farvale, Northreach...Westburn, small towns, villages and smaller places you never heard of. Still, they're are yeofolk, and all like yourself either a Yeoman or Yeoman First Class...either rank though seems to be treated the same, and if anything the First Classer's seem to get everything even harder than the raw recruits.
During training, the core Cadre of B-1/3 is handled by one skinny, but well-muscled captain by the name of Witherspoon who is as foul-tempered and mean-spirited a man as you can possibly imagine, but thankfully, contact with him is pretty rare as most of the training is carried out by his three sergeants - Finch, Hammer and Rock. Finch is a master sergeant, and the other two are likely recently promoted corporals. Finch is almost as distant as Witherspoon, but more mild-mannered, follow his instructions as best as you can and you don't have any problems. His expectations seem to be directed to how you take the "educational classes" more than anything. Hammer...well, you never see him when his face isn't red from screaming, yelling and cursing at one 'ate-up' Yeoman or another, whether they performed well or not, he always has a reason to yell and it seems when there's absolutely no reason whatsoever to yell about anything, he yells that much louder...seems, at times...but only at times, that the more he has to yell about the less he actually yells, kinda-sorta, but not really being "nicer" - but if measured by a yardstick, this might be likened to an inch or two at best - noticeable enough. Rock...well, he's almost the reverse, strong and quiet type...you kind of picture him as a skinny bull-dog...basically he tends to watch and keep silent preferring to let Hammer do all the yelling...but when someone messes up bad, his face turns even redder than Hammer's and he lets loose with curses and insults that leave many a Yeoman crying, and that makes him all that much madder.
During the First week in Basic, there are three basic activities being conducted and they are drilled in constantly:
A. Basic Physical Fitness (stretches and calesthenics and two mile jogs without packs or equipment); DC 10 (d20 + Strength and Constitution Modifiers)
B. Drill and Ceremony (basic stuff you've already had in the militia to some degree - attention, parade rest, at ease, dress right dress, and that kind of stuff). DC 10 (d20 + Dexterity and Wisdom Modifiers)
C. Military Protocols (saluting and addressing officers and while in training, 1st Sergeants and the Sergeant Major as well; ability to recognize rank insignia; and memorizing what your general orders are, below). DC 10 (d20 + Intelligence and Charisma Modifiers)
1. I will guard everything within the limits of my post and quit my post only when properly relieved.
2. I will obey my special orders and perform all of my duties in a military manner.
3. I will report violations of my special orders, emergencies, and anything not covered in my instructions to the commander of the relief.
[Feel free to roleplay as you desire - individual initiative is encouraged...I will trust you to roll 3 individual d20's, in order per the above...]
